They wished to help individuals find their own voices and achieve to their fullest potential. Margaret Fuller, one of the leading transcendentalists, argued for women's rights. She argued that all sexes were equal and should be treated as such. In addition, transcendentalists argued for the abolition of enslavement. In fact, there was a crossover between women's rights and the abolitionist movement.

Other progressive movements that they espoused included the rights of those in prison, help for the poor, and better treatment of those who were in mental institutions. As a philosophy, Transcendentalism is deeply rooted in faith and spirituality. Transcendentalists believed in the possibility of personal communication with God leading to an ultimate understanding of reality. Leaders of the movement were influenced by the elements of mysticism found in Hindu, Buddhist, and Islamic religions, as well as the American Puritan and Quaker faiths.

Transcendentalism was greatly influenced by the doctrine of the Unitarian church as taught at Harvard Divinity School during the early s. While Unitarians stressed a rather calm and rational relationship with God, transcendentalists sought a more personal and intense spiritual experience. As expressed by Thoreau, transcendentalists found and communed with God in gentle breezes, dense forests, and other creations of nature. While Transcendentalism never evolved into its own organized religion; many of its followers remained in the Unitarian church.

Transcendentalism influenced a number of important American writers, who helped create a national literary identity. In addition, the movement also influenced American artists from the Hudson River School, who focused on the American landscape and the importance of communing with nature. Updated by Robert Longley. The importance of nature was a major overarching tenet in Transcendentalism. One of the tenets of Transcendentalism is the importance of a direct relationship with God and nature. In a contemporary context I do not argue that everyone in society should have a direct relationship with God but I do believe that society as a whole would benefit if we all had a relationship with nature. Nature by extension is the Earth, the planet that we inhabit, and our continued existence is dependent upon its survival.

A relationship with nature would instill in people the value and necessity of nature. These were really the two major concepts of Transcendentalism. The large amount of screen time spent looking at computers, televisions and phones results in a decrease in time spent outdoors appreciating nature. This disconnect from nature causes a lack of consideration when producing waste and littering and living in environmentally unfriendly ways that negatively impact and degrade nature and the environment and contribute to climate change.

Spending time in nature brings a person peace of mind and helps them to realize that the world does not revolve around them. These readings encourage individual thought, a value of learning and thinking critically and appreciating nature. Emerson describes nature so beautifully in his essays that it evokes a heightened sense of appreciation for nature in any reader.

Today many people in America and the world react with fear, anger and hatred due to their ignorance. Our educational system in America is still lacking today because it does not teach us how to think for ourselves it just teaches us how to do well on SATs and tests and then after that we specialize on one particular subject in college. In The American Scholar Emerson encourages the improvement of styles of thinking and to pursue learning, he also offers a critique of the state of education in the US in the mids.

Today that still rings true. The education system is in dire need of an upgrade. There have been proponents of education reform but there is still room for improvement. Many people in America are so used to information being fed to them in a classroom that they never bother to think critically; because of this many people that view only one news media network and do not try to verify the facts they therefore accept whatever messages they hear.

This has resulted in an incredibly polarized environment as well as the election of a President that was able to manipulate the media and feed people the messages they wanted to hear regardless of whether or not they were valid.

One example of Transcendentalist thought in action today is a girl named Malala Yousafzai. Emerson established generational conflict and transformation as commanding ideas in American literature when he founded the Transcendental movement. After him Thoreau expanded upon this concept in his work Civil Disobedience.

Reacting to the government in effective ways is very relevant today amidst the political unrest that regularly occurs. Like Trump, James K. Polk was a forceful, aggressive, political outsider intent on strengthening America and asserting its dominance over other world powers.

Within a year of his inauguration he declared war on Mexico because of conflicts over the Texan border. Although he was a very popular president for his gung-ho mentality there were many that intensely disliked him. Sounds eerily familiar. These opponents included Henry David Thoreau who used his anger and passion to write Civil Disobedience which describes what an honest citizen should do about a president they wholeheartedly oppose.

As there are many people today that oppose Trump and what he stands for there is a need for the people to react and respond to the government and deal with this election and what has come after.
