Keep in mind that the only way to get upstairs is to walk up the stairs, so you will want to avoid that level if stairs are a problem for anyone in your group.
You are allowed into the building exactly at the stated show time, and once you get to your assigned table, there will be fresh cornbread and tossed green salad waiting for you. Over the next 30 minutes, spectators are seated, drinks are served and the first part of the show takes place. Speaking of drinks, alcohol is included. The adult drink options include white or red sangria, chardonnay, merlot, Bud Light or Yuengling on draft.
You can also choose from soda, tea, apple juice, milk, lemonade or coffee. Eventually, the main courses arrive — with a thud. Expect the bucket of fried chicken to be slammed on the table when the time comes. There will also be a bucket of barbecued pork ribs and sides of cowboy beans, mashed potatoes, corn, and macaroni and cheese.
The show takes place during most of your dinner and, about 90 minutes after it all started, the grand finale arrives — the thick, rich, strawberry shortcake.
Topped with whipped cream and strawberries, you want to save room for this and it has its own song. Overall, the food was good and you will not leave hungry. Standouts for us were the cornbread, meat and shortcake. The vaudeville comedy will make you laugh at times and roll your eyes at others. Our 4-year-old did relatively well for most of it and our 9-year-old was as entertained as the adults. If you want to make a day of it, Fort Wilderness offers pony rides until 3pm reservations not required.
The last trail ride for ages 9 and up leaves at pm reservations needed and there are also carriage rides available on a walk-up basis around Pioneer Hall. All of these activities are free of charge.
What you find is classic Disney World — and, sort of, classic Americana. The logs of the hall come from Montana, the stone from North Carolina and the guests, as you will learn during show, come from all over. Forty-five years later, they just keep coming.

The Entertainment Division objected to the placement and size of the pillars inside because they said that they were too wide and would ruin the sight lines for the guests.
The pillars, originally constructed from 70 tons of rare ebony stone from North Carolina 4 , remained as they were, but over the years the width of the pillars were reduced.
Imagineering had also wanted to install a wide balcony to accommodate multiple rows of tables. The Entertainment Division objected to this and wanted a single row of tables. Their reasoning was that those not in the first row would be so far back they would see little to none of the show. The Entertainment Division won. This musical group, along with others was probably booked by Sonny Anderson.
Sonny, who somewhat independent of Jani's three producers, was responsible for booking all the musicians, bands, headliners, etc for the parks. When each team needed a specific act for a regular or holiday show, Sonny would work with that division to find that act.
For example, when Ron needed a circus-style dog act for a Christmas parade, Sonny found and hired the act. Once hired, Ron's team was responsible for integrating them into the parade. The intern program was beneficial to both the students and the company.
The students would gain valuable show experience, received classroom instruction, and get eight units of college credit And possibly future employment and the company was able to have an inexpensive source of labor for busy periods. Traditionally there were 97 participating students each year; coming from over 50 universities.
During this time auditions were for the three female and three male character performers. Marilyn has held a number of jobs in the entertainment industry including working on projects for Ron's company, Miziker Productions. Both Tony Christopher and Gary Goddard went on to successful entertainment careers together and individually at Disney and on their own. When the summer was over and the college students headed back to school the Hoop Dee Doo, which proved to be an incredibly popular show, continued on.
This time auditions were held and on September 5, , Disney performers continue in the six roles. According to Ron, the script for the Hoop Dee Doo was a collaborative effort. The writers, as with many Disney shows and productions, tried to incorporate something that was a nod to the Disney legacy.
Davy was woven in by playing off of the coonskin cap and killing the bear. A large section of the show is the Legend of Davy Crockett - complete with bear puns and jokes. When asked how much of the original script has changed over the years, Ron said that the script is exactly the same from except for one thing. When the show first started its run - in the show's finale the troupe would ask the audience to stand up on their chairs with their red and white checkered napkins in their hands and wave them high above their heads.
Well, due to safety issues and liabilities that part was discontinued. Other than that — everything else is virtually the same.
